The Department was established on August 01 1980, following approval of the University Senate on June 17 1980.
It is comprised of 2 Units – Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics.
Paediatric Dentistry is that aspect of dentistry that deals with dental treatment and prevention of oral diseases in children and adolescents including those with special health care needs. Orthodontics is the study of facial growth and development, malalignment of the teeth and jaws and management.
The Department trains undergraduate dental students in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. Training is achieved through lectures, seminars, laboratory work and clinical practice in the 4th, 5th and 6th years of the curriculum. Residency training is also carried out for the Faculty of Dental surgery of the West African and National Postgraduate Medical Colleges by academic staff in Consultant positions at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
The vision of the Department is to produce excellent dental graduates who will be competent in basic management of dental problems of children.
