- Personal Statement
I am highly motivated to pursue an academic and research career in orofacial clefts and orofacial cancers. The expertise needed to carry out the proposed studies began to develop while pursuing a residency program at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. As a lecturer, I have undergone various training in mentorship, manuscript and grant writing, genomics and bioinformatics, research methodology, and research ethics. Currently, as a member of the cleft research team in my institution, I have conducted research on growth and feeding patterns in cleft children and genetics, cardiovascular defects in children with cleft lip and palate, and audiological defects in cleft patients. I have undergone further courses on human genetics with the Iowa Institute of Genetics, University of Iowa. This enables me to further understand human genetics and methods of researching human genes. My goal is to further elucidate the effect of velopharyngeal dysfunction on children with cleft palate and also the burden of oral cancers in our environment.
