- Personal Statement
I am a Professor and Consultant in Periodontology, with research interests in periodontal-systemic interaction in HIV infection, NCDs such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and oral fluid biomarkers. My current research focuses on the relationship between immune reconstitution bone loss and periodontitis following antiretroviral medication in HIV infection among people living with HIV (PLH). This is aimed at improving treatment regimens for PLH in Nigeria and elsewhere. My research also focuses on the utility of activated matrix-metalloproteinases-8 (aMMP-8) oral fluid technology as a rapid diagnostic and prognostic assay for periodontitis and prediabetes/diabetes in medical and dental settings, allowing for early screening and timely intervention in Nigerians.
